What Makes You Different
Part Eight

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I logged on at my and Alex's usual chat time, but she wasn't on. That was weird, she said she would definately be on tonight to tell me if she made the team or not. What if something happened? What if she was hurt or something? What if she got killed coming back from school? What if.......STOP! Calm down Nick, stop physcing. She's fine, she's just late. Nothing to worry about. I started up a game of Solitare while I was wating for her to log on. Four games later, her name lit up.

Yeah Baby says:
your late

Perfect in many ways says:
your mom

Yeah Baby says:
what?

Perfect in many ways says:
your mom, tu madre, whats ur pick?

Yeah Baby says:
whatever

Perfect in many ways says:
besides i was busy

Yeah Baby says:
doing what?

Perfect in many ways says:
turn around you'll find out

Yeah Baby says:
what?

Perfect in many ways says:
just turn around retard!

I turned around as she ordered me to, not expecting to see what I saw. I jumped out of my seat and ran towards her as she gently put the laptop down. We hugged and
kissed and kissed some more. 'What are you doing here?' I signed.

'Aren't you happy to see me?'

'Of course! Why wouldn't I be? I just never expected it. How'd you get out here?'

'A little help from my friends.'

'What?'

'Never mind.' We kissed again.

'So how's life been for you?'

'Alright.'

'Alright? You sounded so happy over the net. What's wrong?'

'I didn't make the team.'

'That's too bad. Im sorry. Maybe those 2 years you missed kind of set you back and everyone else got better.'

'No! I played the best game of my life and I think I did better than half the people who made it.'

'Evidentally the coach didn't think so.'

'It was a new coach who did know me very well. Probably didn't want me on the team.'

'Sorry to hear that. But if that's all that's bad, you must be doing better than alright.'

'That's not it.' I looked at her questioningly. 'I got fired too. He got 2 full time
people who could waitress too, he didn't need me anymore.'

'Sorry again.'

'That's not the worst. He hired a girl in my accounting class. She's working part time, with the full time people.'

'Ouch.'

'It's been a bad week, but that's about it. Hows your life been?'

'Alright.'

'It's gotta be better than alright. You have thousands apon thousands of teenage girls screaming your name every night. That's alright?'

'Not one of those girls are you.'

'That's so sweet, Nick.' We kissed. 'Can we go see everyone for a little while?'

'Sure.'

'I really want to see Brian and Leighanne. I had a discussion with those two, I got to see how things are between them.'

'Yeah, I noticed something about the way they've been acting lately. I used to think everyday that that was going to be the day one of them broke it off. But this past
week, they're joined at the hip again.'

'Oh, good.'

'Brian told me that he finally learned how to talk to her, and she told me she finally learned how to listen.'

'Wonderful!'

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~the next day

I was sitting at the keyboard during sound check, trying to figure out a piano part to a new song I had written , well, for Alex. (It was all a cappella right now.) Even though she couldn't hear it, she could learn the words. I wanted it to be a surprise but then she walked in. I just wouldn't tell her it was for her yet.

'What are you doing?'

'I was going to ask you the same thing.'

'I was just coming here to see what you were doing.'

'Oh, well, I'm working on a song. I just can't figure out what sound to put with it.'

'How's it go?'

'Well, the chorus is, because without you, I'm incomplete. Everytime that I am down, you put me back on my feet. As long as you're by my side, I'll have nothing to hide. But when you're not here with me, I'm incomplete.'

'It sounds beautiful Nick.'

'You like it?'

'A lot.'

'I just wish I could come up with the music.'

'Why don't you take a break. Maybe it will come to you.'

'I suppose.' She walked behind the stage, then reappeared.
'How about a little one-on-one,' she signed, holding one of the basketballs we would give out during the show.

'I guess. We'll find out how good you really are!'

'You're on! Last one to the court pays for dinner!' She took off. I followed after her. We had a court behind the venue that we had been playing at eariler. Sound check was over and we could do what we wanted. I got there soon after Alex had. 'You lose. I've been waiting for eternity!'

'Yeah, ok. Let's play to ten. Loser has to, um, streak naked on stage during the concert.'

'Nah, I'd enjoy it too much. Think about the little kids! They don't need to see Nick Carter naked, but I wouldn't mind.' She laughed.

'Oh, oh. A little cocky aren't we? How about if I win, you have to give me a kiss.'

'I think I could handle that. But since I'm gonna win, I guess you could have to kiss me too.'

'Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what you think!' I took the ball from her hands and ran for a lay-up. 'One for me. Zero for you.'

'That was cheep.'

'Yes, I know.'

'About as cheep as this.' She took the ball from me and did the same thing. 'One up, bay-bee!'

'Not for long!' We started playing fair ball. I admit she was pretty good, no really good. On the verge of totally awesome. I can't believe she didn't make the varsity team, not even jr. varsity. The coach was probably prejudous against her and never gave her a chance, like so many other people in this world. Why couldn't some people just see people for who they are? She jumped from behind the three-point line. I tried to block the shot, but it went right above my fingertips. Swish. She threw her hands into the air. 'I win! Loser, give me my kiss!' I did as I was told.
I picked up the ball, took her hand, and we headed towards the door. She stopped at half court. She looked like she was really thinking hard about something. 'I've got it.'

'What?'

'Well, I think I may have an accompaniment for your song. I'm not sure though.'

'Well, let's go try it out.'
