Chapter Seven: Back Where I Come From

"Come on Natalie, its been over a month since you last did anything with me or any of the chicas. I know it's been hard for you, but you have to move on."

She sighed. "You're right, Ter, I do have to move on. I just dont know how."

"First off, get out of the stinkin house! Come with me, anywhere."

"Ok, want to go out for supper or something?"

"Sure. I'll pick you up at 7, okay?"

"Sure. Bye."

"Bye." She hung up the phone. She had taken her mothers death so hard, but Terri was right. She had to move on. She just wanted to leave this house. It reminded
her too much of her mom. She needed to get out of Wisconsin. She had to get away from all the great memories that brought back the pain of missing her. She had to go
somewhere where she wouldn't think of all the good times.

"Well, it's about time you and me did something again," Terri said as she took a big bite of her Whopper. They ended up at the local Burger King, but it was better than nothing.

"Yeah."

"Why dont talk anymore?"

"I dont know."

"I don't like you this way Nattie, you're scaring me."

"I'm scaring myself. I don't know what's wrong with me."

"I don't either. That's why I wanted you to get out. It's good for ya."

"I think I want to go home."

"We just got here."

"I mean, home, home. Before I lived here."

"Where is that anyway? You never told me where you moved from."

She didn't want her to know where she could find her, she needed to get away from everything she knew now. "Missouri. St. Louis."

"Really? I know some folks from there."

"Really?"

"No, not really, sounded good though, didn't it?"

She laughed. "Yeah, sure. Whatever trips your trigger."

"Hey now!" She would miss Terri, but she had survived leaving friends before. She wanted to see Brian. She wanted to go home to him.

They finished their meals and threw their wrappers in the garbage can. They hopped into Terri's car and took off. "What else do you want to do tonight?"

"Actually, I just wanna go home. I'm tired.''

"No excuses Natalie. We are going to party our asses off tonight. I don't care if you don't want to. You're going to go get your party on with me whether you like it or not!"

"So controlling, damn kids."

"Shut up whore!" Terri was just kidding, but she struck a nerve inside of Natalie that shouldn't have been messed with. She remembered when her dad would always call
her that. Natalie immediately took her hand and bitch-slapped her across the face.

"Oh my God, Terri, I'm so sorry. Just don't, don't call me a whore ever again. You don't know what that word has done to me."

"What is with you? You have changed, I don't like it. What's happened to the carefree Natalie I know?"

She wanted to say 'I'm not even Natalie, so don't even start' but instead she said, "I'm sorry. I've just had a really hard month, that's all."

"I know what you're going through. I still have my mom, but when my dad died, I was like you. Just not this bad, I don't hope."

"Well, I didn't know you then but, at least you still have your mom. I have no one."

"You don't know my dad. You dont know how close we were. You have no fucking clue. You're not the only who's been hurt by losing someone ever."

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it that way...."

"Listen, let's just call a truce here. I don't wanna fight. I dont want to lose you now."

"Truce."

"Truce." They did their secret handshake and smiled at each other. "Listen, if you don't want to go out anymore that's fine. I'll take you home."

"Would you?"

"Sure thing."

"Terri, Im going home."

"What are you talking about? Where are you?"

"At my house. I'm going back."

"Back? Where? Missouri?"

"Listen, I lied."

"What? You lied to me? You never lie to me. I can tell when you lie. You didn't."

"Evidentally I did it good this time, I'm not from Missouri."

"Oh really?"

"I'm from Kentucky."

"What's the difference. Who cares where youre from, I don't."

"I just, uh, she had to think of an excuse. I figured youd make fun of me like you always do."

"Oh, is that all? You know I'm kidding. Anyway, you're going to Kentucky? When?"

"Now."

"Now?!"

"Yes. I have all my stuff packed and I bought a bus ticket and it leaves in an hour."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up. You mean I won't see you again? When are you coming back?"

"I don't know. I just called to say goodbye. I'll probably be back in a few weeks."

"Call me."

"I'll try."

"You will."

"If I have time, yes."

"You will."

"Fine baby."

"Good, well I'm gonna miss you."

"I know, I'll miss you too, but I have to do this."

"You're the boss."

"Well, I gotta go if I wanna make it in time."

"Ok, see ya."

"Bye." She had to do this, for herself.
