Chapter Nine: Chained To You - Savage Garden

'God I'm hungry,' she thought to herself as she finished unpacking her second suitcase. She got into her 81 Chevy that was a piece of crap. She got it for $1,000, she didn't care. She put the rest of her cash into a savings account at the bank down the street. She drove off to the nearest Long John Silvers and walked up to the counter.

"What can I get you today?" a cute, all to familiar, Kentucky boy asked her.

"I'll have the 2 piece chicken dinner. Oh, and a Coke."

"Is that all?"

"Yes."

"Your total comes to $3.79." She pulled out her billfold and pulled out 4 dollar bills. She saw the picture of her and Brian where her driver's license should be. She looked at it and looked at the guy at the counter. The resemblence was all to familiar. She shook it off and traded her money for her food. "Thank you....." he stared at her for a few moments. "Please come again." She sat down at a table at the other side of the restaurant.

*Could it be?...* She looked at him again. He was looking at her but looked away as soon as her eyes met his. She shook it off. *It's impossible.*

He knew he knew her. From where? She looked so familiar. Who was she? She was beautiful. He liked her a lot. Where did he know her from? He went back to work.
If only he knew where she lived or something. He took a piece of scrach paper off the counter and wrote his phone number on it. He flipped it over and wrote Brian on the
other side. He grabbed a mint out of the basket. He wrapped the paper around it and tapped it securely. He grabbed the basket and placed the mint inside. They weren't busy at all so he walked over to her table. "Completmentary mint?"

"Um, sure." She raised her hand to reach inside the basket, but he beat her and took out the double-wrapped mint and placed it in her palm.

"Here you are."

"Uh, thanks." She looked at the mint he gave to her. She carefully unwrapped it. It was a phone number. It was such a cute idea. She watched him walk around the eating area giving out more mints, none as special as hers. She looked at the numbers on the piece of paper. It was a very familiar number. One she had dialed not to long ago. She flipped it over to see Brian written on it. She took a deep gasp of air. She dropped the paper on the ground. The people sitting across the hallway stared at her. She regained her sanity and picked up the paper and continued acting normal. She suddenly wasn't hungry anymore. She couldn't take her eyes off of Brian. He had grown up into such a hot guy. She didn't think he recognized her, he would've said something, wouldn't he? If
he didn't know her, who should she be? The Lillian he once knew? Or the Natalie she was now? She looked down at her food. She saw the scar on her arm. She quickly put
her jacket back on. If he had seen that, he may remember it. The last day she saw him he had asked about it. What if he did know? What would happen to her? She picked up her tray and left. She wanted to talk to him like old times, but she couldn't give herself away. Not until she knew what had become of her dad.

She got into her Chevy and drove a few miles until she found her old neighborhood. Oak and 24th. This is it. She drove slowly down the street full of good
and horrible memories. 1456, my house. It had a new paint job and new cars in the driveway. Should she go up there? Was her dad still living there? She drove down to the
next house deciding it was better not to go up to the door. She went by the Littrell household. She saw a garden in the same spot as she remembered, along with the
clothesline tied to much larger trees. She saw Jackie coming out of the front door. They still lived there alright. She sped up so Jackie couldnt see her. If she was ever to go over to Brian's she wouldnt want her to know she knew them already. She decided she was going to be Natalie. That's who she was now, she was Natalie. Lillian no longer exsisted. Lillian was dead. Natalie survived.

She reached the door to her apartment and saw a note on her door.
Natalie,
There was a call for you
on the pay phone. I think she
*69ed, but I'm not sure. Anyway,
she said she sold your car already
and sent the money Western
Union. If there was any
questions youre supposed to call
her. I think she said her name was
Teddy or something.
-Larry

*No way could she have sold it already!* She ran downstairs and stuck her change into the pay phone. She really needed to get a phone hooked up. She dialed Terri's
number. "Hello?"

"Terri, you sold it already?"

"Hey! Yeah I did. This one guy came by just as I was putting the for sale sign on it. He offered me, guess."

"I dunno."

"Ten thousand dollars!!!"

"Holy shit! Are you messing with me?"

"No, I'm dead serious. He said it was identical to his first car so he wanted it really bad and would pay in cash, on the spot."

"Talk about a struck of good luck."

"Why? Luck finding anybody you know?"

"Kinda."

"Kinda?"

"Well, it's a long story, I'll tell ya sometime, I gotta go now."

"Why? What are you doing now?"

"I gotta go shopping for shit for my apartment."

"Oh, ok. How you getting there?"

"I bought a car."

"Really?"

"Yep, you know that song 'My shit car?'"

"Yeah, why?"

"That's my car they're talking about."

She laughed. "Ok, well, let you go. Bye."

"Bye." She hung up. She pulled out the piece of paper with Brian's phone number on it. Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Besides, if she wasn't who she was, she
wouldn't call him the same day anyway. *Time to go to Wal-mart and buy a stinkin phone!*
